PDF Preview in Outlook 2007 solved

I have been staring at the "no previewer" icon in Outlook 2007 when there is an attached pdf for a long time and every time I do it seems odd that there is not one.

As I use Foxit PDF reader in preference to Adobe's bloatware I was delighted to discover this

VMware were worth every penny

Having just installed VMWare Fusion on a Mac Book Pro I am so impressed. If anything their recent IPO was underpriced. This is the way forward; three OSes on one computer, all playing nice right inside the MacOS

Adobe AIR or AdobeAir?

Looks like the Adobe guys didn't Google the new name before they launched ;-)

Salesforce is using Google Gears; it appears that this fellow has written an app using it already

Looking like Google Gears is going to be huge.

I am using it for Google Reader and it is making working offline for the web a reality.

I am enjoying Zoho as well. I think their CRM offering, which looks just like Salesforce, could be the thing. We are looking at Salesforce implementation across the co. but Zoho with Google Gears could be the thing that differentiates Zoho from Salesforce. Whoever gets Gears done first, and it may be Salesforce as thay have announced an advertising partnership with Google, will be the one we go for.

Handy FCP plugins

Dave Winer finally installs Windows ;-)

I notice Dave Winer has decided to install XP inside Parallels on his MacBook.

I say go for the Vista; it works like a champ on mine.

I have figured out the VPN annoyance. I needed to add the office DNS IP address to the VPN preferences. Vista doesnt assume its the DNS server of choice, unlike XP, it seems.

Removing all cross fades in an FCP timeline

• Select the timeline window
• Put the playhead on the first frame of the sequence
• Press Cmd-F and enter "Cross Fade"
• Click "Find All" and all the audio crossfades in the sequence will be selected
• Press Delete

Thanks for the One Note

I am now a happy fellow. I have Vista purring, I have Office 2007 Ultimate with One Note 2007 (thanks Jim!) and what a job they have done on One Note. I thought Office 2007 was a great upgrade before, when running on XP, but here in its natural habitat it is just marvellous!

I take it all back.

On a machine that can handle it Vista is a dream. I have to admit that I have come close to saying ¨wow¨ on a couple of occasions. Oh allright, I admit I did actually say ¨wow¨...

despite saying that I don't think I will be able to resist installing it on my Centrino Toshiba Portege even though it only gets a score of 1...

Its as if they know!

Last night I successfuly installed Vista an my MacBook (and got VPN working so I can access the Exchange server) Because - at the time - only BootCamp 1.1.2 was available I hd to install all the drivers for Vista by hand.

As I patted myself on the back and surfed the web on the newly Vista-ised MacBook (gets a a score of 3) I see this; http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

They only updated Bootcamp to 1.2 WHILE I WAS DOING IT! Its enough to make you paranoid ;-)

Now of course I am faced with the eternal question of whether to download and install 1.2 and fix a MacBook that aint broken...

Talk about the horns of a dilemma.

Tonight I install Vista on my MacBook

Three years ago I was stuck, jetlagged, in a Hilton in Palm Springs with time on my hands and a free broadband connection. I had spotted a copy of Suse Linux on the shelf in a Best Buy and, intrigued at Linux available in a high street store, bought it. That night, with some apprehension, I followed the install instructions and allowed it to rezize my NTFS Windows XP Vaio laptop - the only working machine I had, 6,000 mile from home - and installed Suse. It worked perfectly and by the end of the night I was dual-booting XP and Suse Linux with no problem at all.

Tonight, in a Hilton in Manchester (which feels like 6000 miles from home) with a £15 broadband connection for 24 hours - why dont they wear a mask and carry a bag labelled "swag" - I am going to try and dual boot my MacBook between OS X 10.4.9 and Vista! May the best man win! At least that way I will feel I got my money's worth ;-)

This is all because I received a copy of Office 2007 from James who now works for MSFT. I feel I owe it to him to give Vista another go!

If your XSERVE RAID won't respond or a NIC is missing; try this


1.Use RAID Admin to turn off the Xserve RAID.
2.If cache backup batteries are installed, pull them slightly out of the RAID.
3.Disconnect the power cables from both power supplies.
4.After 10 to 20 seconds, reconnect the power cables and start the Xserve RAID.
5.All LEDs on both controllers should turn back on.
6.Reinstall the cache backup batteries.

This is such a great idea. I have always felt bad that I don't document stuff that I know or find out in more detail so people can search for it on the web in the way I search for knowledge when I need it. If I contribute here, then I need never worry again!
